Why Location Matters for Your Photoshoot

What distinguishes a good photograph from a great one? I would argue three elements make up a truly spectacular photo: light, movement, and composition. These three things bring life to a flat image and beautifully memorialize the moment so you can cherish it for a lifetime!

Let's look at a few case studies of why location matters when considering these three elements.

  1. LIGHT

In this location, my clients and I chased the morning sun! We all got up bright and early, met at Caloosahatchee Creeks Preserve, and found the most gorgeous lighting in the park. Check out how the sun peeked through the trees in these photos!

2. MOVEMENT

Movement is one of my favorite things to capture in a photograph. Even if I ask my clients to pose, I normally also ask them to "move with the pose." This means I ask them to rock back and forth or sway with each other. But your location choice can also help you achieve the results you're looking for. While it's difficult to capture movement in a studio setting, it can be done. But if you're after photos that capture the heart of your fun, lively family, maybe opt for pictures at a place you can run and explore...kind of like the beach! Check out these images. Notice how the kids were able to run and play and notice how the whipping wind added movement to the photos in a playful way!

3. COMPOSITION

Creativity breeds captivating composition! You know a good photo when you see it. The point of view is interesting. The image just seems balanced and symmetrical. There's a clear depth of field. When choosing a location, think about composition. What unique vantage points can you photograph from? What items can you bring with you to creatively capture an inspiring composition? Check out these photos I captured at a Southwest Florida local photography studio. I knew studio photos can sometimes feel flat. So, to develop an interesting composition, I decided to bring some flowers to capture in the foreground. Check them out!

Southwest Florida is full of stunning locations for photoshoots! Whether you're looking for an urban setting (like downtown Fort Myers), a pristine beach spot (like Marco Island or Naples), or a nature preserve, Southwest Florida is full of perfect photo spots!
